Project
We are working with the Carama community to develop our service project will be. Their priorities include education and their great need for a school; health; and water. We are exploring the best way to bringing clean water and sanitation to the community — digging wells, building latrines. During our GCJ Burundi stay, we will have a Dedication Day of whatever the project turns out to be. We will host two Town Halls –one for the neighborhood of Carama to explore how they can improve their health and well being, and one for leaders and citizens from throughout Bujumbura to empower them to create their way to a prosperous future. There will also be Peace & Reconciliation conversations with the community.
Host: JRMD/YRWD

Our host organization in Burundi is JRMD/YRWD (Youth in Construction in a World of Destruction) which has been using the strategies of rebuilding homes and opening spaces for peace to rebuild the nation over the past ten years. Prosper Ndabishuriye, founder of JRMD, created this organization in response to the seemingly hopeless cycle of war and destruction that has been prevalent in modern Burundian history. His unique way of peacemaking was to bring Hutu and Tutsi youth together on a mission of home building to replace the thousands of homes destroyed by war. To work together to rebuild homes for one’s enemies is teaching how to bring healing and reconciliation to this wounded community through Love and Compassion in action. To date over 350 homes of the intended 800 have been built, which includes housing and latrines for over 2000 families, in what is called the Camara District, or neighborhood.
